In the hallway, outside of Joel’s hospital room, I thanked Delmar again for trying to heal Joel.

“I’m not sure how much good I did.” Delmar glanced around to make sure no nurses were in hearing range. Purple still tinted his brown irises, but it was so subtle that no human would have noticed. “I haven’t mastered my ability yet, and he isn’t one of us, so that limits what I can do for him.”

“I still appreciate you trying to help him. And me.” I rubbed the part of my legs that ached worst.

“You would have done the same for me. Do you need another session?”

I shook my head. “You’ve done more than enough. Go get some rest.”

I owed Kimber a million times more for not ratting me out. Delmar might not be so willing to help Joel and me if he knew what I’d done.

I guiltily hugged him goodbye and went inside Joel’s room.

“I’m strong enough to get out of here,” Joel insisted. “I feel much better.”

Between Delmar’s two healing sessions Joel had slept peacefully for most of the day, but it wasn’t nearly enough for a major improvement to his condition. He was faking, and I envied his ability to lie.

“The doctors want you to stay a couple more days for observation.”

He glanced at the door and whispered, “What’s going on in Rathe during those two days? Will the kraken be sunbathing and drinking Rum Runners while on his vacation from Harte? The sooner I get out of here, the sooner I can help.”

My gaze lowered to the bed sheets. I knew he wasn’t being totally selfish. He desperately wanted to be mer, but he also genuinely thought he could help, and he was willing to risk his life for the chance to prove it.

“Kimber won’t turn you right now. Not after you’ve just been hospitalized.”

“Delmar healed me.”

“He did what little he could. I told you, mer healing doesn’t really work on a human. Your bodies don’t react to our energy the same way.” It was yet another reminder that no matter how much Joel and I loved each other, we were from different worlds with different rules. “You still need to rest.”

“We can wait a day if it makes Kimber feel better, but at least help me get out of here so I can do some research. I’m sure there’s information that can help us in my family archives. I need to get into the vault and find something that can save the day.”

The urgency in his voice made me wonder. “Why worry about that now? What changed since you were on Eden’s Hammock?”

He still spoke quietly so no one would overhear. “Now Kimber is involved. I know how much her friendship means to you. If she gets in trouble for turning me, I want her to have a solid excuse. One that will let her off the hook.”

My blackmail threat ricocheted through my thoughts and my stomach twisted. “What kind of excuse?”

His eyes glimmered behind his glasses. Mischief mixed with intelligence.
